A new retiree’s world is upended when she is tasked with chaperoning her daughter’s abortion. Lucy Sandler directs “the weight of a dog,” a dramatic look at a mother and daughter relationship through the lens of generational disconnect. Mariah, in a complicated break period with her partner, needs her mom’s help to move-out and resolve an unforeseen pregnancy. Her mother calls Mariah’s decisions into question but still aims to support her. California’s backdrop and 16mm paint the scene as Sandler carefully constructs a compelling dynamic ripe with subtext. -JM.
