A young woman confronts the source of her insecurities during a walk in the park. Caroline Falls directs “My Boyfriend Follows You on Instagram,” a cringe comedy exploring a modern relationship dynamic in the age of social media. Sam meets her friend Grace for a walk in a Los Angeles park. Just as they’re leaving, Sam spots a blonde girl snapping selfies and flashing her tooth gem, and there’s something familiar about her. Grace leaves, and Sam stays. She follows the young woman on the trail, recalling her name is Ruby, a micro-influencer, and that her boyfriend follows her on Instagram. Sam’s stalking is comically indiscreet, Ruby notices, and a dialogue ensues. Direct and endearing, the film comedically explores the complications of horny boyfriends and insecure girlfriends in the Instagram attention economy. -JM.
