The Weight of Sight

Through an archive of his own material, a filmmaker considers the last twenty years of digital development. Truls Krane Meby directs “The Weight of Sight,” a personal documentary spoken between Norwegian and English, intensely powered by the filmmaker’s effort to backtrack and reflect. Meby narrates as we watch MiniDV snapshots from his coming-of-age period during the brink of Y2K. He then attempts to timeline his entire visually documented existence, in the digital camera, internet, YouTube, and, to the present, in the vertical video. Cinematic sequences on 35mm film burst intermittently. In an ever-changing media and cultural landscape, filmmaking pursuits feel futile, as does coming to terms with the self and sexuality. It’s a rich archive of visual material, and with a sound design of whirling wind instruments, ambiance, and narration throughout, Meby delivers on an essay film that’s intimate and highly atmospheric. -JM.
