introducing... juan wauters
Documentary • 30-Nov-2020
An intimate portrait and concert experience profiling Juan Wauters, the NYC mainstay underground musician from Uruguay. “Introducing… Juan Wauters,” directed by Sean Patrick O’Brien, matches the scrappy, lo-fi spirit of its subject as he expresses his thoughts on life and music, and prepares for an upcoming show. The film takes on extra nostalgia in the age of Covid, where indoor live music has vanished with no clear timetable of return. Wauters leans into communal experiences — the concert here (filmed last summer) feels like a shared performance between singer and audience, particularly in the charismatic singalong about James Brown (a performance of this song in 2018 inspired O’Brien to reach out to Wauters). A refreshing artist with an endearing presence on and off stage and an earnest body of work, Wauters is captured here with a ragged simplicity. “I like to show people that I’m a human — there are days I feel like jumping around, and days I feel calm.”
Director, Editor: Sean Patrick O'Brien. Music by and starring Juan Wauters. Cinematographer: Donell Clark. Assistant Camera: Anto Gharibian. Sound Mixer: Peter Angelinas. Sound Design: Justin "Razz" Hunter.
