When a young couple moves to an off-the-grid farm in Vermont, they are forced to confront the challenges of self-subsistence and living in isolation. Niall Cunningham directs “Annie,” a paced drama observing the growing tension and relationship dynamics between Annie and Simon and their idealistic new endeavor. They plant seeds in the yard, construct a chicken coop, and cruise through the countryside in a vintage Jeep Cherokee. Although the surroundings and lifestyle seem to be part of a shared passion, minor moments of disagreement slowly begin to indicate otherwise. Drives into town highlight necessary commodities and hours spent outside feel longer and longer. Carried by its strong performances and visuals, Cunningham delivers a simple yet pointed look at the choices of young adulthood and the reactions and resentments that may follow. -JM.
