A delusional real estate agent living out of a rented Tesla reinvents himself to boost his sales and fulfill his ultimate destiny. Max Swanson directs “Archie Banks,” a dark comedy profiling a grind-set con man in his twisted endeavors to find self-worth. Archie, a British, turtle-neck wearing realtor, leads potential buyers on a tour through a Los Angeles home. Between open houses, he watches self-betterment videos, mentors a younger realtor named BJ, and ends his nights sleeping in his car in a Burbank parking lot. The veneer crumbles fast. Someone named Rick from Turo keeps calling, asking when the Tesla be returned, and BJ begins to have questions about Archie’s true identity. When a couple on a house tour notices flaws in Archie’s British accent, the man finally breaks, taking to psychotic extremes. Swanson taps into a dystopian darkness in this satirical character study, re-emerging in our orbit for the first time since a trio of shorts (directed under the name, Max Roux) we featured in 2018 and 2019. -JM.
