Drama, Short Films, 08-Jan-2026
Following her friend's unexpected death, a young woman travels to the mountains to deliver the news to her reclusive brother. Blake Hunter directs “The Last Best Thing,” a sibling drama on grief and a fraught reunion. Julie loads her car and drives into the countryside where her brother, Steven, lives. Their friend, June, overdosed, but Julie was there for it while Steven was gone. Upon arrival, Julie finds time to break away to pick up some environmental ambience on her audio mixer. When she informs her brother of the death, the reaction is frigid. Seemingly more interested in his large format camera, he suggests it was to be expected. Julie stays a night, despite frustration, and as the day passes, Steven quietly wades his way into his side of the story. In the series of tense back-and-forths, Hunter tackles mourning with much empathy and directness. -JM. Director: Blake Hunter. Cast: Eliza Tew, Brandon Jolley, Calli Scully. DP: Finn Ozaeta.
