A tale of sibling betrayal and revenge as told by a ranch horse. “Horse Brothers,” directed by Milos Mitrovic and Fabian Velasco, is a surreal fantasy tale and family melodrama built with inventive lo-fi visuals and a fever dream tone. After an absence, Frodo arrives back to the family farm in a white suit carrying a bag of unsold electronics. His brother suspects Frodo may be pinching money from him and threatens to return back to the old country, “Italia,” as he calls it, if the sibling conflict escalates. The film is narrated by Anton the Horse, voiced by the legendary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin, and that gives you a good starting point to understand the wild vision here, styled with equal parts silent film homage, Mafia melodrama, and classic horror. -KA.
