Comedy, Short Films, 18-Feb-2025
Three young men escape city life for the serenity of the woods but something is amiss. Brendan Lee Hickey directs “Sweet Sorghum,” an ornate horror-comedy built as an unpredictable series of vignettes. Dressed from head to toe in tweed and corduroy, the three gentlemen sprint through the woods while dixieland jazz plays. They're smitten with the sensations of nature but also increasingly filled with fear. The evening strikes, and, as we observe them in night vision, horror ensues. The three feel something, or someone, is lurking deep in the wilderness, watching them. Although the film appears antique in its dialogue and wardrobe, Hickey finds exciting moments for visual creativity by using 16mm film, 360-degree cameras, and night vision. -JM.
