When a struggling artist returns to her stifling hometown, she must confront who she is now and what she left behind. “It Will Happen to Us Again,” directed by Sarah Bloom, is a wintery, coming-of-age drama about a bittersweet homecoming. It’s a few days ahead of Christmas and Fernanda returns to Long Island for the holidays. High school friends await her arrival. Huddled around a make-shift memorial, the reunited group laments a past friend as the snow falls. In someone’s childhood bedroom, old stories about crushes and romance lead to thorny revelations. During a late-night car sesh, a local SoundCloud rapper makes an unexpected appearance. At a house party later, a breakdown in the bathroom makes space for friends to make-up. Bloom captures the complexity of reunion with faces and places of early adolescence, doing so in a warm, endearing tone. -JM. Director/Writer/Editor: Sarah Bloom. Cast: Oona Laurence, Nora O'Donnell, Anthony Costello, Leah Bloom, Nick Paul. DP: Rose Knopper. Producer: Helena Breger. Production Design: Natasha Parbhu and Sarah Bloom. Composer: Edward Rojas.
