Loleh

When a young French woman decides to leave New York City and return to France, her best friend, an American, confronts the reality of life without her. Gino Fortebuono directs “Loleh,” a slice-of-life ruminating on friendship, co-dependence, and evaded pasts. Loleh visits her family in France and helps at their local ceramic shop. Life back in New York feels stagnant, and she accepts the reality of returning back home. It isn’t so easy for Ellen, her lifelong friend in the city, to process the news. Together, they make some impromptu trips before they separate. Ellen visits her estranged family in New Jersey, and Loleh collects old belongings from her uncle and aunt. At around 45 minutes, the film moves at its own pace. Fortebuono focuses on low-key drama and naturalistic exchanges, and the two leads deliver. -JM. Director: Gino Fortebuono.
