Living alone in upstate New York, a mother receives a surprise visit from her daughter. Lily Weisberg’s “Working Summer” is a quiet portrait of the life of an empty nester as her daughter bears witness to a new phase. Deborah spends her days weaving baskets and working in her garden, kept company by a local youngster who helps out around the house. When Nora arrives unannounced, her mother’s independent endeavors come as somewhat of a surprise to her. As Nora enlists her mother’s help for an art project, the generational divide becomes apparent, as well as their shifting roles in each other’s lives. Maintaining an observational tone, the film is rendered with thoughtful compositions and understated performances. -JM. Director: Lily Weisberg. Writer: Michael Bloom.
