No Concept

No Concept

A fight between a dismissive man and his unhinged girlfriend draws the attention of the man’s pestering sister. “No Concept,” directed by Vogue Giambri, accounts a high-octane, aggro afternoon of stomach pain and pettiness. Waiting in the front yard of his father’s New Jersey home in anticipation of his arrival, George smokes a cigarette. His girlfriend finds him outside, yelling that she doesn’t want to be left inside the house alone. Moments later, George’s sister, visiting from the city, also arrives. They’re all supposed to get dinner together but neither of the two ladies seem excited to see each other and George remains aloof and uninterested in appeasing all parties. He’s also preoccupied with his “tummy” that’s been bothering him, exacerbated or caused by family stress. Throbbing dance music doubles down on the migraine that is this reunion. Set in south New Jersey, the family’s bickering and shouting is dressed in mid-Atlantic cadences and pronunciations. Nonetheless, the tension may feel familiar for anyone caught in the crossfire of volatile interpersonal collisions. -JM. Director: Vogue Giambri.
