When two best friends attempt an astrophysical internet trend, one of them must face the consequences of her new reality alone. “A Sweetness of Lapse,” directed by Bashir Aden, is an understated sci-fi drama, detouring into a ‘what if’ universe. Mina and Ava chill at the park. They listen to house music by the car before heading back to Mina’s place. Later that evening, Mina proposes they experiment with an online “timeline shifting” trend which claims to grant an individual access to a new desired reality. Ava has doubts, but Mina insists. Together, they follow the necessary steps and recite the meditative chant to unsettling effect. Aden offers a naturalistic and stylish take on a high concept, carried by a fresh dynamic between Nyah Maree Clay and Maya Schnake. -JM. Director/Writer: Bashir Aden. Cast: Nyah Maree Clay, Maya Schnake, Kevin Wade Jr. Producer: Ahsha Davis. Director of Photography: Gerrit Fahr. Gaffer: Dhruv Mehra. 1st AD: Matt O’Connell, Eesha Patkar. 2nd AD: Tony Bryne.
