Drama, Short Films, 14-Apr-2023
While shopping at a hip boutique, an unassuming Black woman is forced to reckon with the judgement of a white employee. Aisha Evelyna directs and stars in “Alex,” a social issue drama that pinpoints layers of discrimination and hypocrisy underneath ‘friendly’ customer service. Sydney accompanies her white friend into a store which caters to the affluent ($45 socks, for example). As she peruses the shelves, she notes there are no nude bras for her skin color. Alex, the sales associate, insists they highlight POC designers on their Instagram account, but don’t carry them in-store. So sets the tone for an escalating incident that calls Alex’s rhetoric of inclusion and allyship into question. -KA. Director: Aisha Evelyna. Writer: Aisha Evelyna. Cast: Aisha Evelyna, Carly MacIsaac, Perrie Voss. DOP: J Stevens. Editor: Perrie Voss. Producers: Aisha Evelyna, J Stevens.
