Documentary, Short Films, 14-Feb-2021
A mother and daughter trip on Mushrooms together on the Jersey Shore. A unique concoction of documentary, filmed recreations and improvisation, “Are You Ok? Cause I’m Ok.,” directed by Rivka Rivera, finds a passionate mother/daughter coping with love and death. As they prepare for the drug experience, they set out their expectations and fears. The mother worries that her daughter will try to get an emotional reaction out of her for the sake of her film. The daughter is offended she would think that. As the shrooms kick in, their sober bickering is replaced with expansive reckoning with self, sometimes joyous, sometimes emotional (“I’m dehydrated from my whole life; I feel like I can’t drink any water”). Rivera’s film is not so concerned with reaching a clear-headed analysis of the trip as much as getting swept up in the immersive experience, and her film is delivered with buoyant, free flowing editing, and lively scoring / sound design. -KA.
