A fourteen-year-old girl experiences a sleepwalking episode, leaving her haunted and determined to solve its mystery. Molly Longwell directs “Disco,” a careful, psychological thriller involving youth friendship and abuse. Jojo sleepwalks to an undisclosed barn in the middle of the evening. A white horse with leering eyes stares at her. The next morning, her mother expresses concerns over her whereabouts, but Jojo keeps to herself. On the bus to school, Jojo observes an unusual interaction between her close friend, Nat, and a guy she doesn’t know. As the school day continues, Nat remains cold, prompting Jojo to investigate further in a dream state of mind. There, pieces emerge—the young man, Nat’s life, and her family’s barn. Mood is dealt with delicately in the cold, country backdrop. Directed lighting choices and sound design determine a distinct atmosphere between reality and dream. -JM.
