An immigrant couple caring for their grandchildren receive an unexpected visitor after hours, threatening to upend their lives. “In Freedom,” directed by Jorge Sistos Moreno, is a tense drama that pinpoints an ever-present paranoia regarding fears of deportation and harassment. Maria is rattled to find two men in a van asking her for directions. Arriving home, she alerts her husband, Saul, of her suspicions. Soon we learn the couple is currently separated from their children who are back in Guatemala after being deported. Saul attempts to maintain a sense of normalcy in their lives but the current intrusion reaches a boiling point, forcing a retreat. Both a grounded drama on familial difficulties and a potent thriller based on societal and political strife, the film captures a feeling of invisible lives, and it’s carried by pitch-perfect performance and production design. -KA.
