A middle-aged woman runs out of things to talk about with her therapist. Ryan Wagner directs “Oh Man Magdelena,” a surreal, VHS look at a woman and her therapist who reach peculiar breakthroughs during an oddly ominous session. Magdalena peers out the blinds of her therapist’s office. The interior space is dark. Light peaks its way through, and murmurs of a piano can be heard. When it seems there’s nothing left to be discussed, Magdalena recounts an interaction with a drug dealer. As the conversation develops and the specific relationships become a bit more clear, so does our understanding of the emotional weight shared between the two individuals. With its obscure, dark tone and theatrical dialogue, the film embraces an abstract understanding of grief, loss, and how the two exist nonlinearly in our day-to-day lives. -JM.
