After a young woman seriously injures a child, she fixates on getting pregnant with her friends’ unwitting boyfriends. Gabriel Rodriguez-Fuller directs “The Gene Pool,” a peculiar micro-budget feature film starring Veronika Slowikowska and featuring an ensemble of familiar faces like Caroline Yost and William Banks. While the boy she’s babysitting for runs around a multi-floor townhouse, Addy—played by Slowikowska—loses track, and there’s a loud tumble. Floored by the scene of the injured child, Addy spirals and sets out to convince a series of men to have a baby with her. Defiantly lo-fi, the film is filled with uncanny interactions and atypical manners of speech. The world and language of “The Gene Pool” is funny as it is strange thanks to the dissociated deliveries of its oddball cast, led by the fast-rising Slowikowska. -JM. Director: Gabriel Rodriguez-Fuller. Cast: Veronika Slowikowska, Caroline Yost, William Banks, Emilia Michalowska, Rahul Gajasamharamoorthy, Bryson Brunson, Otter Lee, Associate Producer: Alexander Laird, Sound Mix: Noah Chevan, Costume Design: Itala Aguilera.
