Sweet
A girl tells her crush that she loves him and then second guesses herself. “Sweet,” directed by Isabela de la Grana, warmly embraces the excitement and angst of young romance in the aftermath of such a confession. Judy sits across from Danny in her bedroom. He wears a cowboy hat and plays a tender melody on his guitar, making it as difficult as ever for Judy to suppress what she feels—eventually she can’t. A blank exchange of eye contact says all that has to be said about unreciprocated feelings, and Judy spirals. Thankfully, her close friend Loretta waits in her corner. Observing their friends dive into an apartment swimming pool later that day, the two reflect on love, their love for each other, and others. Isabela de la Grana’s voice is refreshing. Stylistic forays with magic and soft piano pieces make for a whimsical and heartfelt coming-of-age account. -JM. Written and Directed by Isabela de la Grana. Produced by Keith Cohen.
