A first date is disrupted by car trouble and a mysterious hitchhiker. Boothe Carlson’s “Excursion” is a lo-fi voyage from the inside of a navy Prius where a trio of odd characters are locked in a series of awkward exchanges. May and Thomas have their first date at a mall in Queens. In the parking lot, they notice that all her car doors are mysteriously open. More confused than concerned, there’s not time to hypothesize before an unassuming stranger approaches and asks for a ride. The ensuing trip and its conversational icebreakers make up the rest of the strangely endearing snapshot. We featured Carlson’s previous film, “Total Transportation” (2023); in both, the director gets creative with the low-budget form, applying a uniquely free-roaming style. -JM. Director: Boothe Carlson. Cast: April Heliotis, Andrew Bourne, Alan Wagner. Producer: Hannah Schulman.
