Two Chinatown coin dealers try to make a deal of a lifetime. David Huang and Albie Smith-Chang direct “We Buy Gold,” a buddy comedy set in New York City with a unique, docu-fictional approach. In a vlog style format, we watch from David Huang’s point of view. David and his friend, also named David (David Ma), eagerly head to the “Queens Coin Show,” a marketplace for buyers and sellers of vintage coins and other collectibles. At the show, another seller, Kenny, flags over the two friends. Kenny pitches David on a lucrative opportunity—Nazi coins. The margins sound exciting, and David impulsively makes the purchase. However, when the guys hit the streets of Chinatown to connect with their vendor base, they have little luck. One sketchy deal into the next, David loses grasp of the situation. Meanwhile, their friendship begins to strain. It’s ingenious and fast moving, packed with comedic chatter, clever twists, and quick fire glances at deep corners of the city. -JM.
