On the day of her mother's wedding, fifteen-year-old, Delia, reckons with a strange incident from the night before with her soon-to-be stepfather. Emma Hall-Martin directs “Congratulations,” an edgy coming-of-age drama that’s precisely observed and beautifully visualized (color scheme, production design, costuming, all highlights). As a cleaning crew combs the house from last night's rehearsal dinner and begins to set up for the wedding, Delia tries to find her mother or anybody to talk to about the unsettling encounter from late last night. A friend arrives and she confides in her but just as soon she’s gone, setting up the possibility for another uncomfortable exchange. Hall-Martin’s film tackles provocative material with maturity and self-assuredness and gets perfect performances from its cast, especially striking is Violet Rea in the lead role. -KA. Writer, director: Emma Hall-Martin. Starring Violet Rea, Hadley Votzakis, Patrick Grizzard, Jenny Taher. Cinematographer: Daniel Christopher-Blackwell. Editor: Olivia Sack. Producer: Colleen Dodge.
