Venusia
Lila’s growing relationship with Luca is threatened by self-sabotaging fears, forcing her to confront her past. “Venusia,” directed by Angela Sari, is a lovely 16mm tone poem capturing a young woman in a moment of indecision set against an idyllic French countryside and village. On a getaway to Luca’s family home, the two young lovers spend time in quiet leisure, wandering around the area, swimming in a local stream, and sharing food. Lila is conflicted between romantic feelings and distance, serenity and isolation. When the prospect of meeting Luca’s mother arises, it further complicates her shifting emotions. Minimally plotted but gorgeously filmed, the film renders a series of painterly compositions with bittersweet, reflective intensity. -KA. Directed by Angela Sari.
