Verbal Diarrhea
Short Films, 26-Jun-2025
Through an autobiographical video essay, a dance artist muses on her transition from restaurant work to full-time teaching. Miriam Gabriel’s “Verbal Diarrhea” is a self-reflective journal entry about career shifts during a particularly manic period of the pandemic. We first find Miriam in the outdoors wearing a microphone headpiece — it’s a clip from one of the exercise videos she released during the pandemic. In her struggle to get a dance-related job, she stuck with the service industry, waiting tables for high-end dining establishments. However, clashes with managers eventually put Gabriel in a predicament. With her voiceover narration, Gabriel tries to track down her own train of thought as visuals of her jumps and jetés fill the frame. We previously featured Gabriel with "Filling Holes," a 2023 short co-directed with Sophia de Baun. -JM. Director: Miriam Gabriel. Dramaturg: Zora Schiltz-Rouse.
