The lives of sixteen women are explored in intimate detail. In season two of "16 Rachels," director Keaton Smith introduces the concept through the eyes of a viewer from a dystopian future. In its deep research of human produced media, an android named Joon discovers a remnant image of a woman named Rachel. Enamored, Joon directs its software to compile data on all who share that name. The recorded documents, presented in a free-floating style, are filmed by each Rachel on a dated camcorder. It’s an intersection between verité and personal documentary, looking at everything from their relationships, family dilemmas, vulnerabilities, and struggles. Dropped into the middle of their lives without context, each vignette holds ambiguities and mystery -- much like the entire project -- but there's an authenticity with each character that feels undeniable. -JM.
