A troubled teen ventures into an unfamiliar city seeking a bond with his estranged father. With “K.I.N.G.,” director Rashad Frett delivers a energetic drama shouldered by powerfully raw & real performances, including from the quietly expressive Jadiah Bailey as King. The film is set in Hartford, Connecticut, a long way from the family’s Caribbean roots, and follows a young man struggling without a fatherly presence. A recent fight between King and a peer has raised more concern, and his Auntie Dee is tired of dealing with the trouble. King tries to locate his dad, but it’s not as simple as that — when he finds him, the situation doesn’t get any easier. Frett finds a natural balance of realism and stylistic flourish (flash zooms + pans, etc), and his film is teeming with vitality and emotion. -KA. Writer, Director, Editor: Rashad Frett.
