On the last night of his life, a struggling, young firecracker takes to the streets to prove his mother wrong. Jacque Rabie directs “Freddie,” an off-kilter, character piece following a young man as he self-destructs on the streets of Los Angeles. Freddie Callahan has plans to go out with his friends. Before the night even begins, alcohol and cocaine take control. The group rallies, but Freddie keeps melting down, sobbing uncontrollably about his abusive mother and questioning the origins of his being. Unearthly narrators and face-blurred overseers begin to appear as the night starts to implode on itself. Just when the raucousness might be coming to an end, Freddie bounces back, urging his friends to head back to his place where an eerie hang awaits. It’s a puzzling portrait of a young man amidst internal collapse. Rabie leans into the nonsensical and absurd, and Jacob Vaus (playing Freddie; also a co-writer) commits—we’ve seen another dedicated performance of his recently in “We Took a Train.” -JM.
