Dom
In the Summertime • Drama, Short Films, 10-Feb-2020
Two old friends reunite on the hottest day of summer in NYC. “Dom,” directed by Meryl Jones Williams (co-directed and story by Jane Stiles), is a sensuous mood piece — minimal but rich in feeling — following Beth through a complicated day spending time with a close friend she hasn’t seen in awhile. The opening scene at a Chinese herbal medicine doctor establishes Beth in a rough spot emotionally (“kinda sad,” as she puts it). When she runs into Dom later, it helps her out of her head but resurfaces old emotions. They spend the day together catching up, getting sometimes troubling glimpses into each others lives now. Much is left unsaid; the nature of their relationship and their past isn’t heavily delved into. But Williams and Stiles capture well the atmosphere of New York City in the summer, days that zig zag and stretch on. An exploration of small moments and fluid boundaries carried by a lively naturalism and expressive performances. -KA. Directed by Meryl Jones Williams. Story by Jane Stiles.
