A young woman gets her back pierced and contemplates an upcoming decision. Irmak Akgür directs “Ribbon,” a slice-of-life portrait that captures a youthful relationship on a quiet but significant day. After her tattooed boyfriend gives her back piercings, he threads a pink ribbon, corset-style, through two rows of rings. As he works, he tells her a story of adopting a dog and being consumed by a wave of panic. Shortly thereafter, she experiences her own moment of anxiety. Told minimally through a handful of static compositions, the film is characterized by its simplicity and naturalism. We previously featured Akgür with her 2022 short, “Limerence,” another portrait of a young couple, which is one of our top viewed films of the last two years. -KA.
