A young woman is left stranded at an abandoned house in apocalyptic rural America to search for a mysterious object. “Abbygail Was Here,” directed by Keaton Smith, is enigmatic horror delivered with minimal plotting but vivid atmosphere and creeping tension. We don’t know the circumstances that brought Abbygail to this place, but she’s driven by a man who doesn’t speak (and who we never see clearly). From radio reports, we learn that no one is supposed to be outside, and when the pair reach the deteriorating house, the trip takes an unsettling turn. Abbygail scours the house — knowing she needs to find something, not knowing what — while her sanity slowly drifts away. We previously featured Smith with his 2018 project, “16 Rachels,” an intriguing lo-fi doc series which followed sixteen woman through their daily lives. -KA. Directed by Keaton Smith.
