A young mixed-race couple in Amsterdam experience a defining moment in their relationship when she asks him to play the lead role in her film about racism. “A Remark You Made,” directed by Hanna van Niekerk, is a compelling exploration of a host of issues related to race, insensitivity, tone, opportunism, etc. Aiming to respond to the racial reckoning of the day, Amy sets out to make a film about a black violin player struggling to break through in his profession, until an older white man offers to help his career. She wants her boyfriend, who is Dutch-Antillean, to play the lead role. The white savior narrative is problematic for Joshua and it opens up a passionate conversation about black pain and white privilege. As Amy seems blind to some deep-seated issues, Joshua looks to his mother for guidance. The film is a candid dissection built from wonderfully natural and nuanced performances from Tarikh Janssen and Lonneke Bakker, who are also credited as story writers. KA.
