A young woman’s birthday surprise for her friend collides with a father and son’s attempt to leave ashes at Universal Studios Hollywood. “Aaron and His Dad Try to Find Closure & Lucy Celebrates Andie’s Birthday at Universal CityWalk Hollywood,” orchestrated by Brad Roelandt, wears its title literally and hilariously in a roaming, single-take sequence. Lucy frantically calls Andie saying she’s arrived at the birthday get-together. From across the city-walk, Aaron (Colin Burgess) reluctantly follows his father who’s determined to find a place to scatter his wife’s ashes. Lucy notices her friends who, it turns out, may not have actually invited her. When she scurries through the courtyard, she falls—balloons fly and cake splatters. Aaron’s father notices, shares unrelated words of wisdom, and also announces he’ll be scattering the ashes on the “Minion Mayham” ride. The short is Roelandt’s third entry in a series of single-take bird’s-eye films—impressive feats of technical ingenuity and choreography.
