A holistic healer and a hip hop producer cross paths. Led by two very funny performances from Blair Socci and Tynan DeLong, “Beats” is a dry comedy about the ways we attempt (and fail) to achieve mental wellness in the modern world. Responding to a targeted Facebook ad, Derek shows up to the apartment of Ruby prepared for healing. His hip-hop career hasn’t taken off the way he thought it would when he moved to New York from Ohio. He needs help. But Ruby doesn’t quite fit the profile of an effective spiritual healer. She struggles to remember the process while referencing her phone. When Derek tells her that he makes beats, the session comes to a halt as they listen to one of his tracks (she herself classifies as a musician because she dropped out of college to follow Mumford & Sons on tour around the country), and it doesn't improve from there. Socci and DeLong have great chemistry and comic timing and “Beats” delightfully captures the fragile nature of chasing dreams. This is the second movie this month we’ve featured from DeLong after his gut-buster Matrix redux, “thematrix061702_ROUGHV.5.wmv.” Socci is new to us but we’re instant fans.
