On a bitterly cold day, a young couple drives into New York City to meet her father but private thoughts about breaking up get in the way. Ella Walker directs “Call Grandma,” a mumblecore day-trip observing an early-20s-something relationship on the brink. Stuck on the roadside, Lennie and Luke stand by a crimson red Volvo. It ran out of gas. The young man hangs back to read Proust while the young woman goes to look for help. She finds a man named Gus who’s happy to lend a hand. As Gus fills with the tank, Lennie finds Luke’s personal journal. The two get moving again and link with Lennie’s father in the city. The father-daughter have a close relationship, cheekily entertaining Luke’s references to literature and his new job at a gallery nearby. Quiet tension looms between father and boyfriend, and, before the young couple can find a nice moment for themselves, Lennie finds herself tracking Luke down to a local bar. Melancholic, Walker portrays the passive-aggressive crossfire of an early adult relationship, questioning the things worth being said or not. -JM. Director/Writer: Ella Walker. DP: Isaí Morales Rivas. Cast: Ella Walker, Noah Galkin, Craig Walker, Bill Dobrow.
