Comedy, Short Films, 08-Jun-2022
In a moment of tense negotiation, Joyce and Mims haggle over a vintage Hank Aaron baseball card inside a sweltering pizzeria. “Card Shark,” directed by Alex Fabry, is an oddball comedy vignette about a should-be simple exchange turning into a strange encounter. Mims arranges a meet-up at his usual pizza spot - where he requests his slice “not too hot” - to sell a baseball card. Problem is, he listed it for $100 and once Joyce arrives to claim it, he raises the price to $250. Not only that, but he begins to get nosy about Joyce’s life, specifically why she’s buying the card. Lifted by its unpredictable performances and thick atmosphere, Fabry picks up where his previous short film, “The Cancellation” left off, demonstrating in both films a fascination with schemers and those caught up in the crosshairs. -KA.
