Set in a near-future industrial wasteland, a desperate woman turns to a questionable temp agency in hope of a fresh start. Veronica Rutledge directs “Citizen Zero,” a dystopian satire focused on the hopelessness of a woman named Lulu in a crumbling world. On her way home one day, she notices a flyer promising a vaguely life-changing opportunity for those who are “passionate about working.” She investigates further, resulting in a series of off-putting interactions with the front-desk secretaries at a company called New Leaf. Back at her apartment, a dispirited roommate, played by Joanna Arnow, suggests she might have to kick Lulu out soon. A number of thoughtful directorial choices contribute to crafting the world of “Citizen Zero.” All under a greenish tint, industrial location choices, considered production design, and a timely soundscape work to form the believability of Lulu’s world and her approach to its circumstances. -JM.
