A young man is pressed to help his older brother rob a rural farmhouse. David Call’s “Coach” is a dramatic thriller following the tense moments leading to a point of no return. Parked at the bottom of the hill, Sean sits in the driver’s seat and hands his little brother a ski mask. The younger brother is clearly hesitant to go through with whatever it is they have planned as Sean stuffs a snub-nosed revolver in his front pocket. “Relax, it’s late, he’s asleep…it’s just in case we gotta scare him,” he says. As the two enter the home, we quietly wait outside. It’s a film that navigates in the unseen and minimal while still managing to capture a sense of frantic disarray. The film’s cinematography places us in a floating suspense, forced to watch a bad idea unspool as a breadcrumb trail reveals unexpected details about these two brothers and their relationship with the victim. -JM.
