Duality Derby

Local racing legend Victor Elaine squares off against his greatest rival, a man whose opposing philosophy on life sets up a battle of outlooks. “Duality Derby,” directed by Mark Richard Miller and Dave Franzese, is a lighthearted rumination on the duality of man: one side focused on kindness and peace of mind, the other, competition and destruction. Both men are played by Franzese, differentiated by branded racing suits — one a Gatorade knockoff emblazoned with the word Gratitude, the other a Red Bull knockoff that says Resentful. Indeed the film is stuffed with clever parody branding (Good Year becomes Bad Year; 7 Eleven becomes 7 Heaven; Shell becomes Hell), but the film is about identity as much as it is a satire of marketing. As the two men prepare for an upcoming demolition derby, they define themselves through a series of interviews intercut with montages exhibiting their personality and worldview. It’s an endearing, gentle-natured exploration built with a full palette of colorful compositions. -KA.
