A young man struggles against his demons in the age of social media and endless dopamine. Andi Lipo directs “Hedon,” a body-horror where masculine urges and porn addiction lead to a downward spiral. The young man gives Bella, his girlfriend, a ride to the airport. While she’s not looking, he scrolls through Instagram to find a picture of a friend’s ass posted on a fitness page. In a trance, he can’t help but stare, nearly getting into a car accident. After dropping Bella off at the airport, the image remains burned into his head. He quickly falls in a vicious cycle of masturbation, video games, and scrolling. Even when Bella FaceTime’s to interrogate the liked-post, the man still struggles to suppress himself. He needs more, and a haunting, autoscopic double helps him get there. Our skin crawls observing the lengths the man will go to in this extreme portrayal of the ‘gooner’ archetype. -JM.
