Two filmmakers scout their next movie in the desert and canyons of Arizona, Nevada and California. But the line between location scouting and a personal vacation is a thin one. “Holiday Lake” by Frankie de Fusco and Sarah Salovaara is a funny spoof on delusional filmmakers seemingly more concerned with feeling cool and talking the talk than getting any significant work done. Presented as mini vignettes in a series of potential locations, the two young women envision how the story would be told. One of them soulfully holds her ear up against a large whale mural on the side of a building: “this is perfect for the secret abortion clinic.” Staring at a herd of cows, the other remarks, “it’s gonna play so well for the horse races.” When they arrive at the Grand Canyon, they are surprised at the amount of tourists — the world hasn’t stopped turning just so they can envision where their character will be zip-lining to and from (“all the way from the parking lot to the North Rim”). Salovaara and de Fusco offer wonderfully dry deliveries and chemistry, and the film makes its point quickly and calls it a day.
