Deranged by a sudden death in the family, a young woman flees to the countryside in the hopes of establishing an idyllic rural life. Mick Robertson directs “How is the Dog,” a creeping psychological horror film where physical distance doesn’t seem to be enough for what a young woman hopes to evade. We meet her in a state of mourning trying to find peace in a picturesque, rural home, with her dog. There, a series of troubling phone calls, cryptic letters and voice messages threaten to unravel her mentality stability. In its incremental building of tension, most notably through an unsettling sound design and score, “How is the Dog” vividly captures oppressive grief framed by the decay of autumn scenery. -Jinho Myung.
