A woman receives a phone call regarding her fertility results before a night out. Emma Pillsbury’s “I am Never Having Kids” is a melancholic silhouette that looks at young adulthood in respect to maternity and womanhood. Through a 4:3 frame and discrete points of view, we observe the young woman as she gets ready for an evening out in the city. There’s a missed call from the fertility clinic; her doctor leaves a message suggesting the two talk soon to go over lab results. Seemingly unstruck, the young woman continues about her night. She meets friends on the subway mezzanine, lands at a bar where some dancing occurs, and, eventually, goes home with a romantic interest. The morning comes and she has a moment to herself. Without dialogue, an entirely diegetic soundscape, and thoughtfully composed visuals, Pillsbury’s film seems indirect, but is carefully compassionate to the realities of her anonymous character. -JM. Director: Emma Pillsbury, DP: Emma Pillsbury, Editor: Emma Pillsbury, Producer: Arian Behpour, Cast: Nicole Townsend, Ryan Henderson, Carter Hahn, Kyle Mason, Composer: Projectionist!
