A hauntingly beautiful 16mm short about a young man seeking adventure or escape or both. A striking collection of images that seemingly materialize out of nowhere, there is no dialogue and no need for any — the evocative visuals and soundscape fill in everything you need to know, or rather everything you need to feel. He hovers from a tree, or peddles a tandem bike solo, or glides through the water on a sailboat — a young American wanderer lost in a post-adventure age. His search for life briefly turns communal as he meets up with friends and they trek through the woods, up an endless staircase into the trees, or across a swaying old bridge. But before long, the friends head back to reality and the man is alone again, still unsatisfied. So he sets out on his boldest adventure yet. Director Sam Kuhn is a young talent we’ve been following closely since the beginning of NoBudge (his early short, Peter, was one of the first on our site). He's an exciting voice in current DIY cinema and "In Search of the Miraculous" is a beautiful and mysterious work. Presented in memory of Bas Jan Ader, a Dutch performance artist who disappeared in 1975 while sailing the Atlantic. -KA.
