A young woman adjusts to living with new neighbors after many months of isolation during the pandemic. Hannah Whisenant directs “Jefferson Avenue,” a simple, richly textured character study about reckoning with the end of solitude. Zora bubbles with anxiety and irritation at her new reality — having spent a good idea of time cleaning and rehabbing her Brooklyn backyard, she now has to share the space with people less interested in gardening and more interested in partying. Her frustration extends to a new boyfriend who is equally insensitive to personal boundaries and private space. Filled with nuance and restraint, and built around the wonderfully natural screen presence of Monica Sanborn, Whisenant’s film is a truthful portrait, both universal and highly specific to New York post-pandemic life. -KA. Written & Directed by Hannah Whisenant. Starring Monica Sanborn, Sheridan Plunkett, Spencer Bang, and Peter McCain. Cinematography by Pete Quandt. Produced by Alisha Bhowmik. Edited by Hannah Whisenant & Sean Weiner.
