A young man is haunted by the music of someone he once knew. “Matilda CD,” directed by Joe Dye, a student project made at Sarah Lawrence College, is a heart-on-its-sleeve drama about a mystical romantic connection. Cal is a college student reeling from the upsetting news about a former student, Matilda, a young woman whom he had just met and fallen in love with. As Cal’s friend tries to get to the bottom of the story, Matilda’s CD surfaces and deepens Cal’s longing. Dye’s film draws from the sentimentality of life on campus in the Fall, and the scattered emotional landscape of an obsessive young man full of first-time love and grief. It’s unabashedly melodramatic but not without occasional moments of humor and self-awareness, and it’s carried out with charismatic performances and lo-fi style. -KA. Director: Joe Dye. Cast: Rohan Padmakumar, Georgia Marshall, Joe Dye. Director of Photography: Joe Dye. Editor: Joe Dye. Producer: Michelle Levinger. Assistant Director: Kaia Goudreau.
