Two sisters dig up their mothers grave in the Australian Outback. “Min Min,” directed by Stephanie Ellis, establishes itself as an atmospheric relationship drama before veering into the supernatural. It’s beautifully shot and cut, and features the compelling performances of Ellis and Anna Cordell. Exposition is light, but there are clues: the series of prayers that kicks off their journey hints at religious upbringing. One of the sisters is pregnant, which could play into why they are after the silver wristwatch worn by their deceased mother. Near the end, there’s a shift that places their desolation in a new light. Minimally told but complex, the film builds a nice rhythm from its combination of extreme wide shots (you can hear the earth rumbling) and sweaty closeups of the sisters digging away, in search of the tangible and intangible.
