At 92 years of age, Ruth Young still maintains an active life aided and accompanied by her jolly 53 year old friend, David Matiz. Emma Baiada directs “Old Young,” a beautifully observed documentary portrait on life, death and companionship. Ruth goes about her days working in the yard, or reviewing shopping lists with David (he ends up getting everything wrong anyways: “You didn’t want ice cream, right?” “I did.”) Taking excursions around the city, including The Philadelphia Mint, where pennies are made (the two met years ago at a coin shop), and to the cemetery where they will both be buried, reveals a bevy of funny and touching moments. Young and Maitz are a pleasure to watch, full of life even lacking peak physical health, and Baiada has a great ability to find and sculpt real moments (she’s also the film’s editor), punctuating with poignant musical cues to open and close the film.
