A flailing Artist and her Muse host a photography exhibition attended by incensed critics and peers from their tainted art world past. “Tasteful Nudes,” directed by Sofia Dobrushin and Emma Rogers, is a playful satire combining mockumentary and performance art, taking aim at the self-obsessed, highly competitive world of art openings. The artist, as she calls herself, is displaying new photographs — mundane shots of her male muse naked — which she hopes will attract the favor of the New York Times art critic supposedly in attendance. But the show breaks down, bit by bit, into chaos, as aggrieved acquaintances accuse the artist of unoriginality, and the critic fails to show. Shot in a loose, anything-goes style, the film takes on the myth of the genius artist, and the single-minded pursuit for outside validation. It’s funny and messy, unafraid to lean into bedlam at times, and ultimately lands with the right balance of silly and pointed. -KA. Directed by Emma Rogers and Sofia Dobrushin.
